The songs 'Driftless' and 'Central and the Union' were recorded in sessions over the past year at Williamson Magnetic Studio in Madison. This studio is a lot of fun because all the recording is done on tape using vintage equipment. Mark Haines, one of the co-owners of the studio, really mentored us in all the basics of studio recording and played a significant role in helping form the sound of this album. He also provided all the drums and percussion on the album.
The song 'Driftless' was written by Jake and is about discovering the beauty of the Driftless area of western Wisconsin. Jake lived in Minneapolis when American Feedbag started so he would drive back and forth regularly through this area on his way to Madison. This was first song Jake wrote just months after learning how to play the guitar. Jake plays all the instruments on this track except the drums, which were played by Mark Haines.
The song 'Central and Union' was written by Kris and was inspired by watching Ken Burns's documentary series "The West." Specifically, this song is about the working conditions experienced by Chinese immigrants while completing the transcontinental railroad. The guitar and lead vocals are played by Kris, the bass and backup vocals by Jake, drums by Mark, and the lead guitar is played by Colin Wymore. Colin lives in Minneapolis, but plays with American Feedbag often and provides lead guitar on 9 out of the 10 songs on this album.
